The ShopBot PRT96 3-Axis CNC Router system can produce large amounts of chips and air-borne dust. If unmanaged, the dust plume can spread and settle throughout the workshop creating respiratory health issues, potential flammability hazard, and interfere with the quality of other work in the shop.
A dust collection system that is designed to remove chips and dust at the source of the work have many benefits and is the first line of defense in shop air quality. Additionally, it can improve the quality of the work piece by removing chips so they are not reintroduced between the tool and stock (i.e. acting as abrasive).
The purpose of this project was to redesign and update my previous dust collection system which had to be monitored throughout a job (i.e. it had potential to interfere or get hung-up on the metal air ducts in the shop area). The new design would mitigate this issue and improve air-flow in the system allowing the operation to run fully autonomously; therefore, the operator would not have to be in the same room during operation and being exposed to the air-borne dust issue.
