Seamless 'Dead Fronted' Interactive Display

Location

Holland, Michigan USA

Date

September 2018

Role

Principal Engineer - Product Innovation

SEMPLUS is a Human Interface Device (HID) that integrates seamlessly behind a surface with the capability of registering touch, multi-touch, differential pressure, and gesturing interactions. It can also be coupled with other technologies within a bonded multi-ply system to extend capabilities such as displays or back lit icons.

The Smart Interior Surface Table of the XiM20 (eXperience in Motion) Autonomous Vehicle Demonstrator was leveraged to showcase one adaptation: The assembly is made up of a 'dead fronted' wood grain laminated material to which the SEMPLUS, a flex screen, back lighting, and structural support is bonded to create a localized display assembly. In this manner, when the back lighting of the display is dimmed or off, the user only sees the seamless wood grained surface of the table. Upon interacting with the 'Jewel' on the surface, the back lighting is increased until it is visible through the screen and semi-translucent wood grained surface creating a 'surprise and delight' feature. The user can then interact with the display by pressing or swiping on the wood grained surface which registers through to the SEMPLUS HID.
