Inductive Charge Activated Phone Holder
Location
Holland, Michigan USA
Date
May 2018
Role
Principle Engineer - Product Innovation
The Inductive Charge Activated Phone Holder integrates within the Smart Interior Surface Table of the XiM20 (eXperience in Motion) Autonomous Vehicle Demonstrator. The user will first note the bright ring of the holder which provides indication of phone placement. Placing the phone within the ring, the user is greeted with a pleasant lighting gesture from the ring, indicating the phone connection with the inductive charging coil hidden beneath the surface. After a short period, another light gesture indicates action, and the underlying micro-controller triggers a mechanism to move supporting table and ring into a position cupping the phone; supporting the device during vehicle transit while providing better viewing angle to the user. The bright ring RGB LED lighting continues to provide feedback of charging status while the phone is 'docked'. Once the phone is removed, there is a small time delay, then bright ring lighting provides a gesture and the mechanism swings the supporting table and ring back into a flush position seamlessly integrated within the table.
